In accordance with the National Employment Standards (NES): A Full time employee’s normal working week consists of thirty eight (38) hours each week. Part time employees have a working week less than thirty eight (38) hours. Casual employees are employed on an as-needs basis. Hours of work details should be clarified in employees’ individual Employment Agreements, especially if there are differing start and finish times across the team members. The specific start and finish times should be explained to individual employees by the Business Owner or Manager upon commencement. Dependent on the relevant Award or workplace arrangement, employees are generally entitled to a minimum of a half-hour lunch break each working day. Depending on the requirements of a particular position, employees may choose a time that is most convenient, as long as all job functions are adequately covered and their absence does not create a problem for fellow team members or clients. Check the Rest Breaks and Meal Breaks clauses in your Award or industrial instrument for more information relating to breaks. Guidelines should be implemented in times of absence. For example, if an employee knows they will be absent, they should immediately notify their Manager by at least 9.30am (or whatever time you specify) on the day of the absence. Guidelines for setting up Out of Office emails, messages and telephone diversions in times of absence should be implemented to ensure coverage of the position and client service is maintained. The Overtime and Penalty Rates section provides more information on working additional hours. |
